This autumn, we had the pleasure of supporting a truly inspiring biodiversity project at Cambridge Science Park, working alongside Bidwells and conservation specialists Greener Growth to transform a tired, dried-out pond into a thriving, wildlife-friendly haven.

The pond on site had become choked with overgrowth, hiding what little aquatic life remained beneath a dense vegetation. With the water gone and wildlife displaced, initial plans leaned toward filling the space with topsoil and landscaping it over. But thankfully, the vision shifted.
Instead, a bold conservation-led initiative took shape: to restore the pond, enrich biodiversity, and create a welcoming space for both people and nature.
Our Role in the Transformation
Our team was proud to support the restoration process, with Martyn, our director, bringing in the heavy machinery to make light work of a physically demanding job. Armed with his trusty digger, Martyn carefully cleared the overgrown vegetation, shaped the pond contours, and helped lay the groundwork for what would become a vibrant new ecosystem.

By enhancing the pond’s incline, we also created a gentle “beach” area, allowing birds and small animals easy access to the water, a vital wildlife-friendly design detail often overlooked in conventional landscaping.
Planting for Pollinators and Biodiversity
A carefully selected mix of aquatic plants was introduced to the revitalised pond. Some original species were lovingly salvaged and replanted. New additions included water lilies and aquatic forget-me-not.
Sustainability in Action
This project was about more than just visual transformation; it was a reminder that nothing in nature needs to go to waste! Bulrushes were saved for use in a larger restoration project, and three common newts were rescued from the old pond bed and given a fresh start in their new home.
As always, we believe in sustainable landscaping that works with nature, not against it. From using the right soils and turf, to repatriating saved vegetation and shaping wildlife-safe pond edges, we’re proud to be part of projects that put ecology and community first.
Looking Ahead
The restored pond is now ready for its first full bloom next Spring — complete with vibrant flowers, gently moving water, and the first signs of returning insects and aquatic life.
We’re proud to have played our part — digger and all.
